James McGrath - Journalist

James McGrath is a witty, dashing, intelligent and overwhelmingly humble writer who can bend an ear with a turn of phrase. Raised in Perth by a single parent in Homeswest housing for most of his life, he is no stranger to poverty and certainly no stranger to hard work. His mother raised two children as best she could after the death of their father, worked full time and managed to get a degree which is something that amazes James endlessly, and has become the inspiration for his superlative work ethic.

One day while eating fish and chips, James discovered the wrapping had words on it. Ever since he took the time to read those words, he’s been fascinated with the written word and its effect on people. He found himself flabbergasted by how something written in a masthead could have an effect on the opinion of those around him, but instead of being repulsed by this power he embraced it.

So, he honed his writing throughout High School while taking a keen interest in volleyball and film. By the end of year 12 James had topped the school in the TEE English exam.

He took his skills and tackled journalism at a university level where by the final year he distinguished himself as one of the top performers in print journalism. In his time, James has written about multi-billion dollar mergers, internet neutrality, German cinema and indigenous health issues.
